Alpha House of Tampa
The Alpha House of Tampa received $5,000 to help support the Parents as Teachers Program, a program that focuses on the developmental needs of children born to mothers living at Alpha House, ages 0-5 years. The Parents as Teachers’ philosophy encourages mothers to be their child’s first teacher, armed with the tools and knowledge to ensure that their child thrives in a healthy and well-adjusted way, both physically and emotionally. Alpha House counselors are able to provide information to mothers about the stages of development every child will experience along with how to recognize and track their child’s progress. Gaining an understanding of their child’s progress gives young mothers the skills needed to interact with her child in a way that maximizes his or her developmental potential. Inexperienced mothers have the opportunity to gain a sense of a confidence in their parenting skills and are better able to prepare their children to become independent, young adults.

Joshua House
Joshua House introduced the LAZYdays RV Center, a building that housed a new recreation center and library. Their $5,000 grant allowed them to purchase 6 desks for the study area, 2 large round tables with 20 chairs for group projects and discussion, 4-6 book shelves where library books could be stored, a set of encyclopedias, and computer software for each of the computers in computer lab area. The school teachers and staff parents at Joshua House often find that children placed in their care have often fell behind academically and emotionally as a result of the instability they have experienced in their daily lives. It was their goal to give the children a quiet place where teachers and tutors could give them private instruction in the subject areas they struggle that is also suitable for independent study. Here, children are given the opportunity to receive a higher level of education and reach for success.

God’s Pedal Power Ministry
God’s Pedal Power is an organization dedicated to providing opportunities for children from economically disadvantaged families in university area of Tampa. Each year at Christmas, God’s Pedal Power gives bicycles to children in need in hopes that it will give them the chance to attend school everyday and participate in after-school activities. In an area where many families cannot afford to own a car, finding transportation for their children is often difficult. Giving a child their own bicycle encourages them to take responsibility for their own future. With a $5,000 grant, God’s Pedal Power was able to purchase 60 additional bicycles as well as 30 helmets, light kits, and locks for underserved children attending Mort Elementary School, a university area public elementary school.

Hope Children’s Home
With a $5,000 grant, the children at Hope were able to enjoy a new playground, donated by Burger King. The $5,000 was used to assemble the playground equipment, construct the concrete slab that supported the structure, and pad the rails for the children’s safety. The children now have a place to play and enjoy the outdoors in a fun, safe environment.

Metropolitan Ministries
The Academy at Metropolitan Ministries received a $5,000 grant that allowed them to meet the educational standards set forth by the Hillsborough County School District by adopting a reading program curriculum using the Houghton Mifflin reading series. The grant was used to purchase the entire reading series including reading practice books, testing manuals, teacher’s editions, and handbooks for their elementary school students. Handbooks include research-based teaching strategies that give teachers the tools necessary to help those students that may have fallen behind or are struggling with reading skills, ideal for the at-risk student population that the Academy at Metropolitan Ministries often serves.

MOSI-Museum of Science and Industry
MOSI was the recipient of $5,000 that was granted for the Pizzo Writes Program at Pizzo Elementary. To help inspire students to improve on their FCAT scores, MOSI and Pizzo Elementary has adopted the Pizzo Writes program. The Pizzo Writes Program encourages and rewards students who demonstrate academic achievement during their FCAT Writes curriculum. Those students who have earned a score of 4.0 or higher will receive up to 5 family passes to MOSI. The Hobbs Foundation grant allowed 75 students and their families to enjoy a day at MOSI. The program yielded a significant increase in the number of students who scored within the 4.0 range.

OASIS Network of New Tampa
OASIS Network is an organization that collects and distributes donated clothing and personal items to underserved children in the Hillsborough County School District. Many of the children they serve attend schools whose dress-code requires them to wear uniforms. In addition to their selection of donated clothing, with a $5,000 grant, OASIS Network was able to purchase 1000 school uniforms to school children of low-income families. With the help of OASIS, these students are better prepared to participate successfully in their education.
